Project Group: Visualization of Deforming Surfaces

The project group finished successfully. You can watch their final presentation here.
Topic: Visualization of Deforming Surfaces
Data about deforming surfaces is important for a range of applications, e.g. respiratory movements of the upper body in medicine, or moving dunes and erosion effects in geosciences.
The visual analysis of time series of deforming surfaces poses some challenges:
- Visualization can be based on volume or surface data
- The visual coding of minimum, maximum, or mean states needs to be defined
- The movements of certain key locations on the surface form paths which may need to be integrated into the visualization, depending on the application area
- Concepts such as the core surface or the envelope surface need to be implemented and their visual coding defined
- Data may be missing or unreliable in some areas or time intervals, requiring some form of uncertainty visualization
This project group will implement a visual analysis tool for time series of deforming surfaces in one application area. The application area needs to be chosen carefully, as it dictates the properties of the data and the requirements for the visual analysis tool; a literature review is required in this first phase of the project group.
Participating in this project group requires team spirit, perseverance, and an interest in Computer Graphics. You need to have passed Computer Graphics I. Additionally, it is helpful to have participated in at least one other computer graphics course, e.g. Scientific Visualization, Computer Graphics III, or Computer Graphics Practical Training.
