Background
With high-resolution spiral-CT scanners, it is possible to record very tiny anatomical structures, such as the middle and the inner ear. The analysis of these vulnerable structures is of great importance for the planning of surgery close to the temporal bone. In this chapter we want to compare both indirect and direct volume visualization methods for this example of clinical practise. An indirect method is demonstrated by the use of threshold-based segmentation, contour extraction and surface reconstruction. The results of the surface reconstruction process are compared to several approaches of direct volume rendering.
